Climate plays an increasingly important role in the European economy – with particular focus on the transport and logistics sector.
The European Union’s target is climate-neutrality in 2050, whilst Germany and Denmark intend to reduce their emissions by 55% respectively 70% compared to the level of 1990 at the latest in 2030.
With its green agenda, Scandlines has set itself a significantly more ambitious goal – we want to complete the path from hybrid propulsion to zero emission within a few years:
Thus, in 2020 as well as previous years, we will continue to invest massively in new technologies to reduce the ships’ emissions and fuel consumption, in order to reach our zero emission goal:
- More efficient, eco-friendly thrusters for the ships on the Puttgarden-Rødby route
- Rotor sail on our hybrid ferry M/V Copenhagen to further reduce CO2-emissions on our route between Rostock and Gedser
- New silicone hydrogel underwater coating for Scandlines’ ferries
In the coming years, too, we have further, extensive projects with a total investment volume of more than M-EUR 90 in planning. At the same time, the fleet bunker consumption will gradually be reduced, depending on the route. Scandlines reduces the BAF by 40% on Puttgarden-Rødby and by 25% on Rostock-Gedser already from 1 January 2020.
Supporting these extensive investments in the transformation process to zero emission ferry operation, we will introduce a stable green investment rate from 1 January 2020, which for you as freight customer will be cost neutral compared to the present surcharge setup (BAF/MARPOL).
